NW Natural Wear Green Policy Statement
|
The overarching goal of NW Natural Wear is to provide online shoppers with affordable, high-quality clothing,
accessories and other merchandise produced domestically and mainly using materials which are either recycled
or sustainable, constructed or grown organically using earth-friendly methods resulting in the lowest carbon
impact possible.
In order to ensure NW Natural Wear is part of the solution rather than part of the problem, we operate our small
business in such a way to make certain our infrastructure and fulfillment methods are as energy-saving and
earth-friendly as possible! The following is a list of the measures we take to reduce our own carbon footprint:
Lighting: At NW Natural Wear, we operate using only natural sunlight as much as possible. However, in Portland,
Oregon, there isn't an abundance of bright, sunny days. NW Natural Wear uses CFL light bulbs in all fixtures. For
the lighting we need for sewing and other close-up, focused work, we utilize LED bulb lighting. Additionally, we do
not leave computers and peripheral equipment in "sleep-mode" when not in use - this eliminates needless power
consumption which, in a 12-hour period can be as much as an additional 5% of KWH consumption! (Glowing LED
indicators in our closed offices are not tolerated - we turn everything off at the power strip.)
Fuel: We consolidate all of our business errands requiring automobiles. Additionally, on a daily basis, rain or
shine, we will either walk or bicycle to our local Post Office to ship your products. The next vehicle we purchase
for the business will be an all-electric one - we'll post up a photo of it when we get it!
Water: All of our toilets at NW Natural Wear are water-saving models. Additionally, we practice a "Yellow is the
New Green" policy of not flushing every time we use the restroom. We will ultimately retrofit our restroom toilets
with high-efficiency toilets (HET), allowing us to choose between a "big flush" (~1.5 gallon) or "little flush" (~.9
gallon) when we flush - but we will still continue to adhere to our "Yellow is the New Green" policy.
Also, we've installed a rain barrel system here, which allows us to use collected rainwater to for our plants and
yard. I believe this practice at least partially offsets the water we consume for drinking and soap making.
Packaging: NW Natural Wear uses as much used and recycled packing materials as we can. This means that
you may receive a box from us that has alternative corporate identities on it. The box will be clean and
strongly-constructed, but it will have been used before. We encourage our customers to either re-use the boxes
you receive from us or recycle them. Packing material will always be pre-used bubble pack and/or newspaper.
Packing slips, product information sheets and wrapping paper will always be printed on recycled paper.
I know that there are countless arguments for and against the wisdom and effectiveness of almost every
energy-saving or recycling measure. I would love to hear from you about your suggestions, experiences or
comments on the measures we've employed to make the earth a better place! Contact me with any questions or
comments: debbie@nwnaturalwear.com
Future Plans: In addition to our business vehicle ambitions, NW Natural Wear has budgeted in 2011 for the
regular purchase of carbon offset credits. Our first quarter offset purchase will take place in March 2011 and we
will publish more about our participation in a carbon offset program in April 2011!
